Credentials
Fiona gained her degree in Health Science (Nutrition and Dietetics) with honours from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and went on to work as a clinical dietitian at The Wesley Hospital, specializing in the areas of oncology, cardiac care, respiratory and orthopaedics. This work included the assessment and prescription of medical nutrition therapy for inpatients, group education sessions for inpatients and outpatients and individual outpatient consultations.
NutritionSense Dietitians began when Fiona purchased the dietetic services at Taringa 7 Day Medical Centre in mid 2008. In addition to her private practice work, she currently works at The Wesley Hospital two days a week and facilitates the Wesley’s dietetic outpatient clinic, Dietitians Wesley, which provides ongoing care to past patients in the areas of cardiac health and rehabilitation, diabetes management and those who have undergone surgery for gastrointestinal cancer.
Her relationship with QUT continues as a lecturer and tutor, training second and third year nutrition and dietetic students in Food Science and Advanced Food Studies. In 2009, Fiona began work as a clinical supervisor for fourth year Nutrition and Dietetics students in the Nutrition and Dietetic clinic at QUT Health Clinics. Fiona was also awarded the 2007 Queensland Meals on Wheels Nutrition Award and is an elected member of the Dietititans Association of Australia (Queensland Branch) Executive.
Fiona has a special interest in the areas of:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and
- Compulsive overeating/binge eating behaviours.
These two conditions impact immensely on quality of life and, particularly for IBS sufferers, dietary manipulation can really ‘give them their lives back’. In many cases, IBS symptoms can be alleviated by correcting inappropriate eating patterns, identifying food intolerances, correcting over/under-eating and achieving adequate balanced nutrition using regular healthy foods.
A ‘yo-yo’ weight pattern, poor self esteem, food fixation and chronic dieting are all associated with binge eating behaviours. Dietetic intervention includes ‘normalising’ a client’s eating patterns and food attitudes, assisting them in learning to enjoy food, by adopting a sensible, sustainable, health focussed, non-dieting approach. A clinical psychologist may also be required to address underlying behavioural issues.
